His Beatitude Patriarch
Gregory III Laham Melkite Patriarch of Antioch and the entire East, of
Alexandria and Jerusalem
On November 29, 2000, the Most Reverend Archbishop Lutfy Laham, Patriarcal
Vicar of Jerusalem was elected as the new Patriarch of Antioch and the
entire East. He succeeded His Beatitude Patriarch Maxirnos V Hakim of
blessed memo- ry. The new Patriarch took a new name, as is the custom.
He chose the name of Gregory n Youssef, the great champion of Eastern
traditions and of the rights of Patriarchs in the First Vatican Council
(1870). |

Le Patriarche Grégoire III Laham Patriarche d'Antioche et de tout
l'Orient, d'Alexandrie et de Jérusalem Le
29 novembre 2000, S.E. Mgr Loutfi Laham, archevêque et vicaire
patriarcal de jérusalem, fut élu comme nouveau Patriarche
d'Antioche et de tout l'Orient. n succéda au regrette Patriarche,
Sa Beatitude Maximos V Hakim. Comrne la tradition le veut, le nouveau
Patriarche prit un nouveau nom. n choisit le nom de Grégoire
Ill, en mémoire du célèbre Patriarche Grégoire
II Youssef, grand champion des traditions orientales et des droits des
Patriarches durant le Concile Vatican I (1870). En 1974, il fut nommé
administrateur du Vicariat Patriarcal de Jérusalem. En 1981,
il fut sacre archevêque et continua son travail en tant que Vicaire
Patriarcal de Jérusalem. Sa Béatitude est bien connu dans
tout le Moyen-Orient et en Europe comme référence en oecuménisme,
liturgie et théologie. |
